The XR Week Peek (2022.09.26): Pico 4 announced, RTX40 cards revealed, and more!

This is the first newsletter of the Autumn! It is not my favorite season of the year, but it is going to bring with it many cool pieces of VR news, and many cups of hot chocolate, so I guess I will be very happy in the upcoming weeks… Top news of the week (Image by Pico)Bytedance launches Pico 4, directly challenging Meta Quest 2 The announcement of the Pico 4, the first consumer-oriented headset by Bytedance, has been much more disruptive than I expected. With it, Bytedance directly challenges Meta and the Quest 2 with a product that is more powerful, cheaper, and offers a quite good content catalog.  Let’s see some of the specifications: Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2, 8 Cores 64 bit, 2.84GHzRAM: 8GB LPDDR4X, 2133MHzStorage: 128GB/256GB, UFS 3.0DisplayType: 2.56″ x2 LCD displayResolution: 4,320 x 2,160 (2,160 x 2,160 per eye)PPI: 1200Refresh rate: 72Hz / 90HzField of view (FOV): 105° DiagonalIPD:

The XR Week Peek (2022.09.19): Pico 4 is launching on 22nd, PSVR 2 gets reviewed, and more! [+ Giveaway]

This is the last newsletter of this Summer 2022! The weather is starting to get cold here, but our XR ecosystem is getting hot, with the upcoming launches of Pico 4 and Quest Pro, not to mention the upcoming NVIDIA GTC where I hope to see RTX40 graphics cards being revealed! Are you excited? Because I am… Top news of the week (Image by Pico)Pico to launch Pico 4 on September, 22nd Chinese manufacturer Pico has just officially announced that on September, 22nd (that is, in 3 days) it is going to launch a new product. The image shows what looks like a quite thin headset, and two arcs that look a lot like the Pico 4 controllers I leaked a few weeks ago.  There is no official news on this device, but the leaks give us some interesting info about it. It should be dubbed Pico 4 and come in two

The XR Week Peek (2022.09.12): Meta Quest Pro leaked, Snap working on future Spectacles, and more!

Happy Mid Autumn Festival everyone! This weekend people in China were celebrating one of the most important holidays of the year, and I got as a gift a lot of Chinese food, including some mooncakes, so I was able to celebrate it, too! I hope you had a nice weekend as well 🙂  It’s been a pretty intense week for me: I worked really a lot; I have been banned from Twitter twice in two days because its AI thought that my posts about Pico were porn images (my account has been restored, don’t worry); I’ve seen the posters of the project I’m working on being attached in the metro stations in Paris; I had an emotional interview with the guy that made me start my blog; I survived another Apple event without XR news (which are coming always “next year”); and I ended with the very long review of Pico Neo

The XR Week Peek (2022.08.15): NVIDIA makes many announcements at SIGGRAPH, new leaks on Apple and Pico, and more!

As you’ve read in my other article written today, this is a special day for this blog… but it is also Monday, so I won’t skip writing a new amazing roundup of AR/VR news 😉  So, wishing you a happy Ferragosto (the name of today’s holiday in Italy), I leave you to the best XR news of the week! Top news of the week (Image by NVIDIA)NVIDIA and other companies show their best at SIGGRAPH Every year the SIGGRAPH is an event where companies showcase the best technologies they have for 3D content. This year has been not an exception in this sense. Meta has let the public try its prototypes, including the Starburst headset, which thanks to its very high HDR is able to render lit scenes in a very realistic way. Many people that tried it came out impressed by it. Also, another startup showed how it is able to change the

The XR Week Peek (2022.08.08): Xiaomi unveils its smartglasses, Improbable and RP1 want to create the networking for the metaverse, and much more!

I guess that during these days of hot summer many people are on vacation, so I wish you all to take some days of rest. Probably also the big guys of XR are on vacation because this week we have very little interesting news about things happened in our ecosystem. So… don’t expect this to be my best roundup ever… 😀 Top news of the week (Image by Xiaomi)Xiaomi unveils Mijia smartglasses A few months ago, Xiaomi unveiled a concept video for its upcoming smart glasses, which should have featurd notifications from the phone, automatic translation of text from/to the Chinese language, map directions, and many other features, while still offering a very sleek design.  This week, Xiaomi actual unveiled the real hardware that should make that vision become real: dubbed Mijia AR Glasses, these glasses have a nice set of features. For instance, they have: A micro OLED 3,281 PPI display with

The XR Week Peek (2022.07.25): Google to test AR glasses in the wild, Pico 4 spotted, and more!

The heat hasn’t killed me yet, so this week I can still write a new roundup of interesting news about AR and VR. I have to say that notwithstanding the summertime, some things worth reading have happened, so do not miss this episode!  Before starting with the news, let me remind you that until this week the candidatures for the job positions at VRrOOm for game developers and game/UX designers are still open, so if you want to work with me on virtual events and festivals, be sure to enroll! You can find all the job descriptions on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/vrroom-world/jobs/?viewAsMember=true. And if you want to discover how to prepare for the job interview with me… well, Joma Tech has made a great video on the topic you can’t miss: https://twitter.com/jomaoppa/status/1550966113458077697 Top news of the week Google starts testing its AR glasses in the wild Google has announced that it is going to start

The XR Week Peek (2022.07.11): Meta removes Facebook login on Quest, Cambria may launch without controllers, and more!

I send you all a big hug for the beginning of this new week! I hope this news roundup may give you some interesting info about XR… and also some smiles 🙂 Enjoy your summer! Top news of the week (Image by Meta)Meta to substitute mandatory Facebook account with mandatory Meta account on Quest This week finally Meta has given us a follow-up on its previous promise of removing the mandatory Facebook login on Oculus Quest. And the big news is that next month, this rule will be removed, and finally, the VR headset will be separated from the social media, with much rejoice of many people in the VR community.  Anyway, personal accounts on Quest aren’t going anywhere: every Quest user should create a mandatory Meta account, and also a mandatory Meta Horizon profile, which will be used every time you access the Horizon social VR worlds. It is optional for users to

The XR Week Peek (2022.07.04): Big tech companies perform budget cuts, Mojo tests its smart contact lens in-eye, and more!

Today is the 4th of July, an important day for all my friends from the US! I wish all my American friends to celebrate well.  I want to dedicate this newsletter article to my friend Mathew Olson, who at The Information kickstarted the “Reality Check”, a newsletter about XR which I received 3–4 times a week in my e-mail, and that was very well done. It has been one of my favorite newsletters about XR and I admit I have “stolen” sometimes some news from there. Mathew is now going on a new professional adventure and will stop curating that newsletter, and I just want to write these few lines to say how I am grateful for the good job he did in informing me and all the XR community. Good luck with your new job, Mathew! Top news of the week (Image by Niantic)The economic situation is forcing major tech companies

The XR Week Peek (2022.06.27): Meta shows its R&D prototypes, Apple shows nothing as usual, and much more!

It’s hot and the drought is creating some issues here in northern Italy. But I had a nice weekend, plus I’ve been chosen by Onalytica as one of the top 5G+XR influencers on Linkedin, so I think of this and I stay happy. Top news of the week (Image by Meta)Meta showed prototype headsets from its R&D department With a completely unexpected move, Meta has given us all a glimpse of some prototypes created by its R&D department. Mark Zuckerberg himself has performed this marketing push, in which he claims that the company is working hard to make sure that its headsets will be able to pass the “Visual Turing Test”, that is that the visuals they offer become indistinguishable from reality.  To perform this ambitious goal, Meta is trying to tackle four different problems (thanks to Road To VR for this summary): Varifocal: the ability to focus on arbitrary depths of

The XR Week Peek (2022.06.20): Roblox may come to Quest, Meta launches Avatar Store, and more!

It seems that in many countries of the world this weekend was Father’s Day… so my best greetings to all of you that are fathers! It’s curious that actually in Italy we celebrate this in March… but who cares, whenever is the day, it’s always good to celebrate our daddies 🙂  I’ll be very upfront with you: this week in XR has been very boring, so you won’t find super-news here below, but there are some interesting things that have happened in our ecosystem anyway. One of them is that I’ve become for the third year a judge of the VR Awards! Yay! I am very thankful for the trust that AIXR puts in me, and I can’t wait to begin the judging process. Top news of the week (Image by Roblox)Roblox may come to Meta Quest There is a rumor that is circulating this week: Roblox may come to Meta Quest. I don’t
